Hypnosis
The Hypnotic Word

Do you believe that knowing and using certain words and phrases gives you an advantage over everyone else?

Have your every searched the Internet for words that are more hypnotic than others?

I was curious about hypnosis from a very early age. I saw traveling hypnotist shows and read ads on the back of comic books. These ads were for hypnotic disks and books that promised to teach you everything you needed to know to hypnotize your friends and be the life of the party.

When I was 14, and had been sent to a private catholic school, I decided to order a book for $1.00. When it arrived I was very excited. It lived up to it's promise of teaching me how to hypnotize.

Before bedtime one night, the dormitory monitor, a priest, seeing what I was reading, grabbed the book from my hand. Very angry, he told me to report to the school Director in the morning. It almost cost me my school year.

He decided, after speaking to my father, that he would let me complete my year. He informed us that hypnosis is banned by the Catholic church. The Director refused to give me my book when I asked for it back. I wonder if he read it?

My father could not understand how a school could discourage any learning. Later he whispered to me that he thought the Director was a nut.

Despite that incident, and with my father's encouragement, I learned everything I could about hypnosis.

Over the years, I only maintained an interest and I never really used it except once or twice at the school before I left it at the end of that year. I was always defiant of authority in my own quiet way.

Then, a few years ago, I bought several other books and learned self-hypnosis.

After discovering NLP and reading many different books, including all of the NLP creators' original publications, I decided to do a search for words and phrases that are supposed to be hypnotic. I found several lists from 80 words to 880.

Most of the phrases, sounds and words were copied from transcripts of Milton Eriksson's therapy sessions with clients. Eriksson is a world renown psychiatrist who used controversial methods, like hypnosis, to help his patients through their issues.

The founders of NLP analyzed his sessions and decided that it was how he used language and posture that allowed him to be so successful with his patients.

In order words, they used him as a model for their hypnotherapy. Many new developments in hypnotherapy have come from those studies. And now hypnosis is used extensively even by those professionals, like psychiatrists, who originally frowned on it.

If you are looking for a list of those hypnotic words, you won't find them here. Unlike certain NLP practitioners, I do not believe that specific words used in a certain way are more hypnotic than others.

I believe that all words, all language, is hypnotic. If I can convey my thoughts to you in a very exciting and believable and sincere way so that you are excited too by the ideas I am saying, then you will be hypnotized in the same way I am.

If, with my words, I am able to create images and thoughts, a flow of words and pictures in your mind, that excite you, that give you an adrenalin rush, then you are hypnotized by the words I say. Not only are you hypnotized, but I am also. I need to be in order to pass on those feelings and ideas to you through my words.

By saying words I am not controlling your mind. It is a fair exchange. You are choosing to allow the words to say to create whatever emotions you derive from them.

I choose the words to express my ideas and, you choose to either accept those ideas or reject them. If my words fall within your beliefs and expectations then you will accept them.

That is the basis of all hypnosis: a willing subject, a trusted hypnotist and an expectation that an inner focusing will occur.

In a state of curiosity with the adrenaline rush of new learning, you are captivated by and focused on your inner awareness of the moment.

That is, by definition, hypnosis. A heightened sense of inward focus and awareness. The hypnotized person remains totally aware of what is happening in the moment.

When you are in love, you understand immediately what hypnosis is. Both hypnosis and the state of being in love have the same spell binding focus, the same sense of inner awareness in your mind.

Hypnosis is a very helpful tool for most therapists. It allows you to accept necessary changes to your beliefs while being in a relaxed and receptive state. Learning new ideas is much faster when you are relaxed.

If you are expecting to be convinced or hypnotized and what you hear or read fits your belief systems then you will accept what is being said. All language is hypnotic if the speaker or writer is excited, convincing, believable and you trust him.
