Dieting With Hypnosis - The Difference Between Success and Failure in Your Weight Loss Plan |
We all want to lose weight, be healthier, look great in clothing (and look good without clothes on, too), be attractive to ourselves, our mates and other people.
Yet, more and more Americans are not only overweight, we're obese. Our children are also headed down the wrong road, they are getting more obese every day.
We tell ourselves "I need to stop overeating" or "I'm really gonna do it this time" or "It's a simple matter of willpower." Then we embark on the latest extreme diet, guaranteed to make us lose "30 lbs. in 30 Days" or some such nonsense. In short order, sick and tired of not eating, we return to our "pre-diet" way of eating and start the cycle all over again.
Others of us try and lose the weight by exercise alone. The gyms across America are full of these overweight people trying to lose weight by enrolling in an aerobics or kick boxing class.
Let's cut through all the baloney and get right down to basics. It's simple math. By rigorous exercise, we can burn about 100 calories per mile (walking and running). We burn slightly less than that by doing most other forms of exercise and slightly more with other forms, but the point is this: you can't lose weight by exercise alone, it cannot be done.
"What?" you mutter. "Why, I just saw Tony Rigatoni, the famous trainer-to-the-stars, advertising his latest exercise gadget on that info-mercial and he guaranteed me that I would lose all my excess weight just by exercising with his gizmo for 15 minutes per day."
This is pure nonsense designed to get us to buy Tony's latest gizmo, period. Tony knows that 90% of people will not use his gizmo as he has instructed (or will order it and not use it at all), but also won't ask for a refund, so he can claim anything he wants, virtually risk-free.
Maybe we decide we're going to exercise the good old fashioned way, we'll walk it off. Let's do some math here: Let's assume that we are going to get our rear-ends off the couch and start a walking/running program. The problem is, we haven't walked anywhere in a long time. So, we have to start slow. After about a month of walking every day or every other day, we get to the point where we can walk for an hour straight.
Hooray! We feel a big sense of accomplishment and start to feel fitter and more in-shape. The problem is that we aren't losing any weight. Why not?
Here's the problem. Walking, although a wonderful exercise for feeling good and getting healthy, doesn't really "burn" that many calories. Using our example above, if we walk for an hour at a very good pace, we will travel approximately 4 miles. This "burns" or uses about 400 calories.
If we walked 4 miles per day, 7 days per week, we would burn a weekly total of 2800 calories. There are 3500 calories in one single pound, so we would have roughly lost only 4/5 of one pound!
How many weeks do you think the average person will exercise for an hour a day, 7 days a week, if they are only losing less than a pound a week? Now, let's make matters worse. Our local walking club walks every morning in one of the beautiful city parks in the summer and in the mall during winter months. At the end of their morning walk, they all meet at a coffee shop for socializing and drinking coffee. I see most of the members drinking high calorie "designer coffee" like mocha, etc., every morning and most will indulge in a pastry at least every other day. These people have actually gained more weight by going to the coffee shop than they lost by walking!
So, you see the point. The point is, you should exercise for the health benefits associated with exercising; it's wonderful and I highly recommend it. But, unless you cut down on calorie intake, don't expect exercise to cause you to lose weight, the math isn't in your favor.
One of the best ways I have found to cut down on eating is to recognize that we all eat for very different reasons. Some of us eat to satisfy hunger (not many of us, really), some eat food as a comfort, some eat to overcome psychological problems, some of us eat out of pure habit, some (most) find ourselves eating as a form of social convention. Think about it: the last time you ate, were you really "belly-aching" hungry or was it just your normal time to have a meal? I'll bet it was the latter.
Once we acknowledge that we eat out of habit, or social convention, we can begin to address the root causes of over-eating. I have found that hypnosis is an excellent way to "re-program" my subconscious mind to overcome the "habit" of eating. By the regular application and use of hypnosis (I use audio hypnosis on my iPod) I reorient my habits and only eat when I'm hungry.
Guess what? It turns out that I'm not hungry 3-5 times per day, I was just used to eating that way my whole life. By breaking the "habit" of eating and now eating only when I am hungry, I find myself eating far less often.
Here's another thing I found out: by eating only when I'm hungry, I don't eat at pre-set times. We "civilized humans" invented pre-set breakfast, lunch and dinner times to accommodate work, out of social necessity. After using hypnosis to break that mold, if I get hungry at 2:00 in the afternoon, that's when I eat!
I could not have broken out of my self-destructive eating habits if not for the aid of hypnosis. Hypnotic suggestion has reduced my craving for food, in such a subtle way that I don't even realize I don't crave it anymore.
Please, if you are struggling with your weight, don't just jump on the latest band-wagon and believe that exercise will cure all of your weight related problems: it won't.
To lose weight, you have to cut your calorie intake, plain and simple. The easiest way I have found to do that is with the use of playing audio hypnosis tracks while I am working, reading, sleeping and exercising. Give it a try!
